Many decades later Lincoln’s interpretation became an axiological and ideological basis for politicians and social activists and it still influences Americans’ understanding of their political tradition. The Gettysburg Address has always been one of the most important speeches throughout history. Meant to mobilize the nation in a time of crisis, the speech went viral in its day. ![]() On the basis of the works of Willmoore Kendall and Melvin Bradford I will present the argumen‐ tation suggesting that Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, in fact, marks a radical redefinition of the “American experiment” which, with time, became an official and binding interpre‐ tation of the founding documents. President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address at a turning point in the Civil War. ![]() The main thesis of the paper is that both the unquestionable place of equality in the American Creed and the quasi‐constitutional status of the Declara‐ tion of Independence (treated as a preamble to the Constitution) are both myths. As Abraham Lincoln explained in his Gettysburg Address it is a principle upon which the American nation was founded – through its founding document, the Declara‐ tion of Independence – and, at the same time, an ideal the realization of which the Ameri‐ can nation is “dedicated” to. And from all of this death and devastation, people began to ask themselves a number of important questions. On November 19, 1863, at the dedication of a military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, during the American Civil War, President Lincoln delivers one of the most famous speeches in American.
